START WITH THE WHOLE SPACE

Plan the pond and the space around it

A pond can sit beside a patio, become the focus of a garden or form part of a larger landscape. Its shape, stone edges and waterfall should work with the places you already sit, walk and look out from the house.

Water features are a UCL specialty. We can help develop an early idea through concepts, samples and material choices, then build the agreed pond and surrounding landscape work.

01 / LOCATION

A place that works day to day

Consider the view from the house, nearby trees, surface runoff and room to move around the pond. Construction access and space for future cleaning matter alongside the finished shape.

02 / WATER AND EQUIPMENT

Plan beyond the water’s edge

Pond layout, water circulation and filtration need to work together. Include practical access to pumps, skimmers and filters in the design conversation, rather than hiding equipment where it is difficult to reach.

03 / STONE AND SURROUNDINGS

Bring the details together

Stone edging, waterfall height, planting and nearby paths shape how the pond fits the yard. Discuss the sound and movement you want, along with any patio or lighting work planned around it.

UNDERSTANDING THE INVESTMENT

What affects pond installation cost?

A useful price starts with the site and an agreed scope. Pond size alone does not describe the full installation.

Share your priorities and budget during the initial conversation so the options can be considered together.

The size and site

Pond dimensions, excavation, ground conditions and access for equipment and materials all affect the work involved.

Stonework and moving water

The amount and type of stone, edge detailing and the scale of a connected waterfall influence material and construction requirements.

Equipment and connections

The proposed circulation and filtration system, equipment location and necessary connections belong in the project scope.

The landscape around the pond

Include any agreed paving, planting, lighting or restoration around the installation when comparing the full project cost.

PLAN FOR OWNERSHIP

Enjoy the pond with realistic upkeep in mind

A pond needs ongoing attention. Leaves and debris, aquatic plants and accessible equipment need care; the amount depends on the setting and the system. No pond design removes that responsibility entirely.

Discuss cleaning access and seasonal care while the design is still flexible. If fish are part of your idea, raise that early so their requirements can be considered before the layout and equipment are settled.

UCL offers pond cleaning and fall pond closing. Ask about the care appropriate for your proposed pond and the services you would like help with.

From your first idea to a finished pond

A clear plan connects the pond you want with the work needed to build it. Timing depends on scope, access, complexity, weather and the season.

01

Discuss the site and your ideas

Tell us what you have in mind. We discuss the scope and measure or inspect the space as needed. You do not need a finished design before getting in touch.

02

Work through the quote and materials

Further discussion, concepts and samples help refine the choices. We prepare the project quote and work through material selection.

03

Agree on timing and build

We discuss an anticipated start and timeline. Once construction begins, UCL generally stays on the project through completion, weather permitting. Larger projects started late in fall may continue in spring.

A few questions before you start

Can you add a pond to an established backyard?

Yes. UCL works with established properties as well as new builds. Identify the trees, gardens, paving and other features you want to keep so the layout and construction access can be considered around them.

What if I already have a pond?

For an existing feature that needs repair, updating or rebuilding, start with our pond repair page. UCL considers that work where the project is a suitable fit.
