PLAN THE SPACE FIRST

A patio should fit the way the space is used

The useful questions come before colour and pattern: where people enter the space, how furniture will sit, what the patio connects to and whether it is one feature or part of a larger landscape plan.

01

Dining and entertaining

Plan enough usable area for the furniture and movement you actually expect, rather than fitting the layout around a leftover patch of yard.

02

Everyday access

Doorways, walkways, steps and changes in grade shape how naturally the patio connects the house to the rest of the property.

03

Whole-landscape fit

A patio can stand on its own or connect with retaining walls, planting, lighting and other landscape features as part of a larger build.

MATERIAL DIRECTION

Choosing pavers or natural stone

Upper Canada Landscape installs paver and natural stone patios. We help you compare materials for the way you will use the space, the look you want and the surrounding landscape.

Pavers and interlock

Paver systems offer a wide range of sizes, colours and patterns, which makes them useful when the patio needs to coordinate with other hardscape elements.

Natural stone

Natural stone brings variation in colour and texture and can work especially well when the patio is intended to feel closely tied to the surrounding landscape.

We regularly work with products from Oaks, Permacon and Santerra. Other brands may also be used.

BELOW THE SURFACE

Plan the preparation and finishing details

The surface is one part of a patio. Site preparation, water flow and edge details belong in the installation plan too.

Ground conditions and base preparation

Existing soil, excavation and a properly prepared base affect how a patio is supported. Ask how preparation will account for the conditions on your property and the chosen paving system.

Grade and drainage

Plan where surface water will go and how the patio meets doors, steps, paths and garden beds. These levels need to work together before the paving is laid.

Edges, joints and transitions

Paver installations need suitable edge restraint and jointing. Natural stone details depend on the material and installation method. Discuss how the edges and transitions will be finished, along with care for the selected surface.

PROJECT SCOPE

What affects the scope and cost of a patio?

Your patio quote depends on the site, materials and agreed scope. These are the main factors we work through when planning the project.

Size and layout

A compact seating area and a multi-zone patio do not carry the same scope. Dimensions, transitions, steps and connections to the house or yard all affect the project.

Material selection

Pavers, natural stone and specific product choices can change both material and installation requirements. UCL works through material selections during the quote process.

Preparation, grade and drainage

Existing grade, drainage, soil conditions, demolition and access can change the preparation required. Those conditions need to be understood before the scope is finalized.

Connected landscape features

Retaining walls, walkways, planting, lighting or other surrounding work can make the patio part of a larger landscape build rather than a standalone feature.

WHAT TO EXPECT

From first conversation to construction

We start by understanding the site and how you want to use it, then work through the layout, materials, quote and construction schedule.

01

Consultation

Discuss the scope and measure or inspect the space as required.

02

Refine the plan

Work through the layout, concepts, samples and material direction as needed.

03

Quote and scheduling

Prepare the quote, confirm selections and establish an anticipated starting date and timeline.

04

Construction

Once work starts, UCL generally remains on the project through completion, weather permitting.

Project timing depends on size, scope, complexity, weather and season. Large projects that begin late in fall may continue in spring when necessary.
